I work from home, my combined backend/frontend sits next to on my
desk.  I frequently put on CNN, or one of the other 24 hour news
channels in live TV.  I will have it on all day, and may actually
WATCH about 30 mins total when a stories catche my notice.

This is far from uncommon... MANY professional people keep a TV on in
their offices to keep up with the news.  I have never been in a stock
broker (or other financial type) office without seeing Bloomberg
running all day on televisions around the office.
Political/government type offices almost always have CNN on... its so
bad that my agency broadcasts CNN over our IP network so people can
watch it in a window on their desktop while they do other things.
