Just a minor point but the VGA, DVI and HDMI cable specs allow for the  
computer to power the EDID in the display so the display does not have  
to powered for the computer to boot. Computer monitors are very good  
at this but TV manufacturers are probably saving costs by not having a  
separate EDID ROM for each digital input. They are breaking the specs  
for VGA and DVI and maybe for HDMI if it has to be on before the  
computer but good luck getting them to change.

As you say bodging a working EDID is a good workaround but don't  
forget to redo it if you change your TV.
