The HD 4000 GPU can address 1.7GB of system RAM (from what I can
find).  However it is up to the system to set a soft limit on how much
that is.  I would be contacting any Mobo maker that doesn't let you
set the max memory for the GPU up to that value.

Most likely there is a BIOS option called "Max DVMT" that can be
adjusted.  If not I would contact the Mobo manufacturer.

HD video in mythtv typically requires 512MB of video RAM.  I don't
know what crashes he is seeing, but I suspect they are similar to
issues seen on early ION systems with only 256 MB of graphics RAM.

I would say that once the manufacturer corrects that BIOS issue (if it
is indeed a BIOS issue), then his MOBO will be fine.
