Hi,
Just another data point:
Recently I started to add to my ongoing 'myth-pxe' (working code-name) 
project an VAAPI support.
My motivation is to offer easy(*) myth experience (appliance) on exactly 
such devices like ION/ION2 and i.e. Intel NUC.

Test bed is Intel MoBo with i3 3220T (IvyBridge HD2500) and I must say 
current VAAPI status on Intel gfx seems to be v.good.
-Playback of H264/MPEG2 SD material has 1-2% CPU load.
-For HD I can't say as Intel DH67BL mobo don't allows to set Video 
memory bigger than 256M - so launching HD content causes frontend to 
crash after 0.5-1sec of playback (BTW: knows anybody any way to increase 
video memory on this mobo?)
-myth deinterlacers are set to 'none' - but surprisingly I can't notice 
classical interlacing video artifacts on picture (so maybe 2.21.15 Intel 
drivers or mythtv have deinterlacing by default?)

Anyway - VAAPI software in Linux/Intel looks v.good to me these days(**) 
so NUC looks like perfect candidate for mythtv fe.

(*) - idea is to have fully functional mythtv frontend in form of only 2 
files residing on backend machine (with backend/tftp/dhcp/http servers). 
Those files are downloaded to virgin,diskless ION/NUC hw via BIOS PXE 
and are giving full, auto-configured MythTv (and only MythTV) frontend 
experience in form of dedicated appliance.

(**) - IIRC libva guys already added deinterlacing and basic picture 
controls to libva 1.2.1 driver. What is more interesting - they also 
added H264 QuickSync encode API's support - this might be very 
interesting in context of mythtv HLS streaming (I saw benchmarks where 
QuickSync on i3 was something like 3-5x faster than sw decode on 
high-end i7).
