many thanks.

i did all that and at first it looked even worse (lost access
to programmes that had previously been recorded and i could no longer
watch live tv (it said all tuners were busy which wasn't true)) but i
killed mythfrontend (which still won't terminate by itself) and started
it again and both the recorded programmes and the livetv came back. yay!

in my initial attempts to fix all this, i had stupidly changed the
"Local Backend" ip address from 10.0.0.1 to 127.0.0.1 based on a post
i encountered that contained some of the error logs i was seeing.
that was the only "hostname" change (apart from the silly default
value in config.xml). but my problems started before this ip address
change.

given that the hostname never actually changed, would it have been easier
to just reload the pre-upgrade mythconverg backup and somehow prevent the
problem from happening (whatever it was: config.xml perhaps?) so that i can
retain my existing recording instructions? i would really like to have them
back rather than having to reconstruct them all again but i suppose i can
live with it.

and of course i would also really like to be able to terminate mythfrontend.
any idea what's causing that?

cheers,
raf
