Just to give some more info from the earlier useful replies,

No obvious errors in the backend or frontend logs.

Sound is via the hdmi on the card. Guess I could try switching to a 
separate spdif lead

I'll keep an eye on the commit 590f161 and daily fixes and see how it goes.
