Specifically, in the EPG, Global/SELECT (by default, Return, Enter, and
Space) will change to that channel and exit the EPG if the selected show
is in progress or starts withing 15 minutes. Otherwise, if the program
is scheduled to record, it will allow you to resolve conflicts or change
overrides. Otherwise, if the program is not scheduled to record and
starts more than 15 minutes from now, it will allow you to create a
recording rule to record it. Intuitive, right?

However, a /much/ more direct approach is to use:

Global/EDIT (by default E) to create a recording rule for the show
TV Frontend/CHANUPDATE (by default X) to change to the
currently-selected channel in the EPG, regardless of what time period is
selected
TV Frontend/TOGGLERECORD to change the currently-selected program's
recording type (from not recording to recording, and successive presses
cycle through the scheduled recording type list).
