And I'm guessing in the US (land of "if at all possible, force the 
consumer to pay for it"), it's even worse.

Seems all that interests me are the NBC, Fox, CW type things--all of 
which should be easily picked up using an antenna for OTA ATSC--and NASA 
TV.  (Based on http://www.lyngsat.com/freetv/United-States.html .)
