audio will only work if I disabled internal volume controls and no
amount of changing any other setting works from me.

On my previous install I had audio over hdmi with software control in
order to allow me to use the mute button and PCM and master were both
set to 100% (using the [ ] volume keys would reduce / increase the
volume accordingly)
