Sorry, I can't help you with that one.  Based on what you've posted, I
would have expected it to be working.

The answer to this will vary a lot.  The best hardware for recording
really depends a lot on what you're recording from.  If you're using
an antenna, the answer will be different than if you're recording from
cable, and if you're recording from cable, the answer depends a lot on
who your provider is.  If your provider insists on marking nearly
everything with restrictive copy control settings, then people do tend
to buy one or more HDPVRs.  If not, then cable card solutions are
quite popular.
