The recorded list pop up menu has an "allow this episode to rerecord" item which will accomplish what John wants. Unfortunately it's per-show only, meaning you can't use it with playlists, so it gets tedious issuing it for several dozen recordings. If one could whip up a keyboard macro then it might also be a good approach.
