After much testing, I discovered that the 12.04 ubuntu - 64bits package was
the culprit.  I was able to install and run the 12.10 version without any
problems.  After running the setup wizard, I am now able to watch both test
videos with under 10% cpu usage :)

The only issue I have is that apt-get wants to update the installer back to
the 12.04 package.  However, I don't think I need the installer anymore now
that the additional packages have been installed.
