[mythtv-users] more about config.xml

After needing to add

"<LocalHostName>profile_identifier</LocalHostName>"

to config.xml  I thought it might be a good idea to make the file read-only.

Now I see  "Could not open settings file /home/John/.mythtv/config.xml 
for writing" after calls to

mythutil --clearcutlist

mythtranscode --mpeg2 --buildindex

mythpreviewgen

The calls seem to do what is expected.  Do they need write access? 
Would my edit be in danger if they had it?
