If your card is indeed video1 instead of video0, then the next thing is to find out the range you can give it to do set-ctrl.  I am not sure of the syntax for finding the settings, but the man page for v4l2-ctl will show you how to find the numeric range to use.  For my HVR-2250, the range was -50 to +50 I believe. I set my volume to -5 with good results. Check to see what the range is for yours before using -5.
