I would have recommended starting a VNC server on the remote host, then on
your client "vncviewer -via user at hostname hostname:1".  This will tell VNC
to set up a SSH tunnel and then run VNC traffic over the tunnel.  In
high-latency environments (i.e. east coast to west coast), it's much nicer
dealing with VNC vs. standard X.
