recall that the CableCard information is used to negotiate with the
Tuning Adapter and/or sent to the upstream head-end, so I think Tuning
Adapters require CableCards.

As for SDV rollout, it varies based on the provider.  Comcast, for example,
started, and then stopped after a few (test) markets.  They are instead
rumored to move to (some combination) of mpeg4 (interim solution?) and
their magic "God Box" (aka CMAP).  What they said was something like
they were going to pursue alternatives, which left those that like to conjecture
to speculate and start the rumors.

The Motorola Tuning Adapter was placed into one of their old (mostly plastic)
STB cases (I presume a time to market thing), even though it is clearly overkill
in size.  Cisco at least had the decency to create a new (smaller) box.
