One plausible scenario is that as your computer PSU died it
momentarily draw a large enough current to trigger an overload warning
on the UPS.  If that situation still existed when you plugged the PC
into the wall then it would have blown a fuse somewhere, possibly
inside the PSU if you're not using a fused plug.
