I have never gotten firewire to work reliably on the STB's I get from
Comcast. It works well for channel changing, but recording was always
hit or miss, and lots of channels I want are encrypted. So I had to
resort to HD-PVR. My understanding from reading a number of firewire
threads on this list is that it is somewhat hit or miss; it may well
depend on which STB you have, which firewire chip you have,
kernel/driver version, etc. Some people report it as rock solid, others
like me can't really get it to work at all.
