Yes, some work was done on this last June by Paul Gardiner and JYA. See:

   - thread http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/482116
   - http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/9356
   -

   - Release notes for 0.25 identify the "passthru" ability for
   mythtranscode

Although 0.25 has a LOT(!!) of great features, this was the gem I was long
looking forward to as well. It was one of the first things I tried, and
unfortunately, somehow it had gotten broken prior to the official
release. I was about to report the problem, but saw Paul had beat me to it
and submitted his original "Pull" request (ticket #10693; which
unfortunately was rejected).

The problem is currently tracked under:
 http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/10736: Fix passthrough case of
mythtrancode running in fifo mode

I know it's considered poor etiquette to add a "+1" type comment onto a
ticket (so I haven't), but I do check its status pretty much daily ;-) The
developers have been pretty busy with the recent ffmpeg resync and other
priorities, but I'm sure this ticket will be addressed eventually.

I've really been happy with mythtv for the past 7 years, and I'd

Yeah, my "Previously Recorded" goes back to 2004/07/16, and I agree that
mythtv has been a very satisfying choice, both in terms of stability and
evolution.
