RAID =/= Backup
What I'd suggest is use rsync to keep a copy somewhere. Done manually
it only needs :
rsync -avH --numeric-ids / root at someothermachine:/slavebackup/
You can exclude some files if you want to save a bit of space.
Then to recover, stick a disk in the machine, boot off your preferred
recovery disk (whether that be Knoppix, System Rescue,
${fvourite_distro}-live, whatever) and :
Partition the disk and format the filesystem(s) - they don't need to
be the same size or layout as long as each is big enough for what it
will hold.
Mount the filesystems under (eg) /mnt in the arrangement they will be
in - so /mnt/, /mnt/var/, etc.
Adjust fstab if you've changed the layout.
Install GRUB - easy with GRUB1, not too sure how to do it with GRUB2 :(
Reboot.
Optional Steps:
Boot again with live disk and set the boot partition as bootable,
slap yourself for being forgetful !
