Yeah, I'm 100% sure it's not just X - I saw the BIOS boot screen come up, 
and the uptime is back to a few hours (or so) when I don't.

Auto-install updates is turned off (according to 
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades)
