Using the disk without partitioning will work for non-boot disk,
the only real problem there is a number of tools assume partitions
and are likely to consider a non-partitioned disk to be unused.
In particular, you must be careful when adding new disks &c.

Another issue is that file system alignment may be non-optimal,
resulting in loss of performance. This may or may not be
significant in any specific case. (If you have spare time
in your hands, testing this might be interesting.)

So, there's no really compelling reason to partition the disk,
you can use it as is, but partitioning it would be preferable.
