Well folks, I seem to have made some progress. Following advice/help on

Gavin,
these maybe helpful resources... I can get a fresh install of myth running
on a bare box in under 2 hours these days.

Download mythbuntu, burn to cd http://www.mythbuntu.org/downloads
install (I never dowload updates during install).
install mythbuntu auto-builds http://www.mythbuntu.org/repos
install medibuntu - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

using the restricted drivers (in settings area of the main-menu) feature of
ubuntu install nvidia driver and the dvb-firmware
 alternatively for the firmware:
http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-NOVA-T-500#Firmware

set the relevant lna setting:
http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-NOVA-T-500#Forcing_the_activation_of_LNAs_.28Low_Noise_Amplifier.29

I use this line in /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf

options dvb-usb-dib0700 adapter_nr=2,3 force_lna_activation=1

this ensures that the amplifier is enabled and that the card appears in the
same position so that it is correctly recognised by mythtv alongside my
other tuner cards ( I did have a nova-t500, a peak dual dvb-t tuner and a
nova-hd-s2 card).

when
shutting down the system or rebooting... make sure you fully shut down and
remove power, wait 10 seconds... replug-in restart (required due to nova-t
500 driver bug).

when configuring the tuners set multi-rec under the options to 1 and setup
all the tuners, then once all your tuners are configured go back and change
them all to 2 or 3 or whatever your system can take.

dont ever delete a single tuner from within myth-setup, use the delete all,
or delete all from this backend and re-create them.

I dont think you need to do what you are doing of testing each layer of
software.... unless you get problems then you can go back and test the
various components... but that's just my opinion.

hope this helps - bit of a rambling email... sorry.
