The first thing you need to do is just a:

echo /sys/class/rc/rc0/protocols

to see if you are actually looking at the right thing... you should get a list 
of the protocols available.

It's possible you need some value other than 'rc0', or, worse, it changes every 
boot. dmesg is your friend.
