BackupPC is just a software package so it is definitely a contained
backup system. Since you already stated you have room for RAID1 I would
highly recommend using the 2nd RAID drive you had planned as a backup
drive. Also consider that backups are not real-time and are more about
sustained transfer so you can readily use cheaper/slower drives (like
green drives).
The only downside I can think of to BackupPC is that it probably has a
steeper learning curve than RAID, but I think the benefits far outweigh
the up front effort.
