I checked/confirmed this last night. My settings with my GT520 are VDPAU Advanced (2X) for everything.
I have never experienced problems with playing back anything with this setting, including recorded analog, 480p, 720, and 1080i shows, and DVD and Blu-Ray ISOs.
Furthermore since upgrading to GT520 (from on-board nvidia 9400 graphics), I can now playback my Pink Floyd PULSE DVD. With VDPAU + nvida 9400, it played every DVD I threw at it but that one. For some reason it wassn't able to decode that one DVD's mpeg video stream properly, (it looked all blocky and wierd) yet the same rip plays fine with my GT520.
There's an interesting article about VDPAU on wikipedia that lists all the VDPAU capabilites of various nvidia chipsets:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_PureVideo
According to the table there, the 410M and GT520 are currently the only card with VDPAU feature set D, which introduced 4K resolution / QFHD video decoding at up to 3840 x 2160 pixels, including MVC (Multiview Video Coding H.264 decoding support for Blu-ray 3D and other Full HD 3D at 1080p, and HD audio (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio) bitstreaming / passthrough support.
it Seems to me that if you are buying a card now, the GT520 would be a no-brainer.
