Great minds think alike. I thought of that just after my head hit the
pillow. But I think that is a red herring. I should not NEED a modprobe
to bring the network back. If I do, then there are more serious issues
with the OS. And those 2 unexpected network responses seem to me. to
point to something flaky in the motherboard hardware: a capacitor
failing or a cold solder joint.

Although why a cold joint should start messing up after 2 years is a
little weird. WOW. Just looked up the purchase date in the accounting:
February 17, 2009

Yes NICs are cheap, but as you say, pci slots are not. I have ONE
available PCI-E slot in the box (the little one inch version). The
Geforce 9500 uses the long PCI-16 slot and of course, covers the PCI
slot next to it. The remaining PCI slot has the PVR-500 in it.

So I need to find a PCIE NIC *or* find a USB<>NIC which works. There are
some of those around, but none seem to profess any love for linux.

Oh great...$10 worth of gas to go buy a $12.00 NIC!
