That change didn't quite work, though it was a step in the right
direction.  A subsequent commit to Master does it right, but I haven't
committed it to 0.25-fixes because I'm now seeing a new premature EOF
problem when the program transition happens.

I can't explain why it would fail midway through a program, but I've
seen that reported elsewhere.
