The field specifies the exact email yours is in response to, so clients 
that understand threading can properly place it in the thread tree.  
Your responses lack this header, meaning as far as most clients are 
concerned, you have started a new thread.

Gossamer-threads understands that many email clients behave improperly, 
so any response containing the same subject string is marked as being 
part of the same thread.  However, lacking the IN-REPLY-TO field, the 
best it can do is place the response chronologically beneath the 
original email, rather than in reference to the specific email you 
responded to.
