I'm not familiar with the HVR-950Q specifically, but the scan button's
enabled/disable state has nothing to do with any of the settings. It
is dependent upon what type of recorder it is (HDHomerun, IPTV, Demo
Recorder, etc). The scanning option is only available for certain
recorder types (it should usually be available for the ones that
actually need to scan). So my first inclination is to think you might...

I am sorry but that response is largely gibberish to me. Are you referring to the Card Type field? How am I supposed to know what to set that to if the authors of the product do not? I have tried:

USB MPEG-4 encoder box
Analog V4L capture card
IVTV MPEG-2 encoder card
H.264 encoder card

And NONE of them enable the channel scan button either in Input Connections or Channel Editor.

The product should have a knowledge base built into it from the experiences of past users that suggests the best options to use, rather than requiring each new user to search through the mountain of information available on the web just to get this product to work.

Also I am frustrated by the need to learn a lot of unrelated peripheral technology, such as how to post to and respond to messages on this mailing list, just to record programs off my rabbit ears!

The only reason I am going this way is that I cannot find a commercial off-the-shelf PVR that will work with rabbit-ears and I don't run Windows on any of my home computers. All of the commercial products I have investigated are tied into either a CATV or satellite distributor. For example I went into my local Future Shop and asked about it and they told me to go talk to their computer department because they had no box they could sell me to act as a PVR unless I subscribed to a CATV or Satellite distributor.
