One more thing which may be relevant: the directories currently in the
storage group are NFS mounted on both the master and slave backends so they
are not local in either place.

and please start mythbackend with the command-line argument:

mythbackend -v file,extra

and attach a log file showing a failed recording--ideally the complete 
log file from start up until the failed recording.
