[mythtv-users] how to apply mythtv patch?

i've been going through some problems i brought up here recently, and one
solution was to apply a .patch to mythplayer.cpp (specifically
http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/9997)

however, i dont know how to actually apply the patch.
it's only a 2 liner, so i could manually change the file in question, but
it'd be good to know how todo this properly.
