i actually moved away from a full DNS server, and moved back to my
routers inbuilt one. pretty much the sole reason i did have DNS was i
was using a windows server, and WDS (server 2008r2 PXE deployment
solution) required AD, and thus DNS.
no more windows server, no real point for dedicated DNS.

maybe i'll need DNS once i play with linux PXE (a possibility one day!)
anyway, internet backup and things are working perfectly!
