both of your understandings are correct. i suspected that the same
channel, but different sources was the issue.
thanks for the suggestions - the script im using is
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/UK_Channel_Assignments#Combined_FreeView_and_FreeSat_HD_channel_assignment.
with a few added lines for channels that do not exist

i'll probably leave the current setup intact, RMA replacement should
be here today/monday and i'm away for the weekend anyway.
if it were a bug, i'd get it reported, but it seems not and is just a
side effect of having a temporarily missing tuner card.
