Essentially something happens on the transition when a programme starts or stops which causes audio to be lost. If I start a recording on the adverts between programmes, the sound plays fine but then stops as soon as the programme starts. The reverse can also happen - start playing during a programme and you get no sound between programmes.

With vlc the codec info display changes when the sound disappears. I
can only copy the display manually, but it shows 'Stereo' during the
introduction and 2F2M later.

Stream 1
Type:Audio
Original ID: 6602
Codec: MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)
Language: English

Channels: Stereo (plays) or 2F2M (silent) or 3F2R/LFE after an
out-and-back switch, as Glenn described above, when it plays.

Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
