i also build from source for a few simple reasons

1. there isnt any precompiled slackware64 packages
2. i like to keep up-to-date with master/trunk
3. the vanilla source doesnt yet scratch all my itches so i run some 
patches that do that
       - libass subtitle patches(5 all up including ffmpeg backports)
       - increase buffers in xv and opengl to 127 so video doesn't look 
glitchy with 16refframes content
       - and hopefully alot more to come later i like to fiddle with code
4. it doesnt take that long since i have a script thats a lil bit of a 
mashup of the rpm script in git repos and the slackbuilds scripts that 
cleans and updates the source, applys all my patches and compiles 
everything for me
