I assure you that, after we have logged in to the system for him, my
five year old son is perfectly capable of selecting a program to play,
pausing it, playing it again, and finding something new to watch. No
remote on that frontend, either: he has to use the keyboard.
MythTV doesn't need much more end-user friendliness for casual
use. It's already there.
