This isn't necessary when you specifically define what the device
output is going to be like you do in mythtv.
MythTV 0.24 from my repo or using trunk/master has a built-in speaker
test ; the speaker-test tool isn't necessary (nor can it handle
anything other than discrete PCM audio)

because you aren't using a recent version of alsa
