I have 2 HD-PVRs and I have not had any problems with zero byte 
recordings for at least 5 months. I only experienced that problem when I 
first installed them last August and didn't have things configured 
right. They have been quite reliable for me after the initial 
installation snags. I don't know if they have fans or not.
