Scratch that.  The checksumming in those filesystems is to prevent bitrot
in the actual stored content.  I was under the impression all modern
filesystems stored multiple redundant copies of their file tables,
scattered across the partition, both to improve read performance by
limiting seeking, and to prevent such silent corruption from damaging
critical data.
