In /etc/sysconfig/lirc I don't have any driver specified, because lircd -H help doesn't return mceusb as an item in the list (even with the new kernel you provided a link to). So I'm now ready for any new suggestions. :)

I had a bit of a stumble there until I had set the lirc device to be /var/run/lirc/lircd too. That was with kernel 2.6.35.9-64.fc14.x86_64. Then I updated to 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64, rebuilt lirc as I did before, but now it doesn't work.

Odd. The default driver *is* the "default" driver. If you have LIRC_DRIVER="",
lircd will be launched with no --driver (or -H) param, which means "use the
default driver". Are you sure you didn't maybe have LIRC_DRIVER=" " or similar,
which would cause the initscript to think you specified a driver of " " to be
used?

Good to hear.
