nothing that should make a difference with this. I ran that kernel
with firewire and didn't notice it give me any issues. I'm not saying
there may be other benefits, and from that and perhaps a security
standpoint it may be beneficial to upgrade, I just doubt he'll notice
any difference in these ieee1394 issues

yes, it looks like all variants of that card use a VIA chipset, which
in my experience is your issue. Very few people have had good results
with the VIA firewire chipsets. If I were you I would look for a card
with a TI or NEC chipset.
I'm using this card,
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001MWHI00/
on my master and slave backend, which has a TI chipset and have had
excellent experience with it. My former backend motherboard which I
gave to my parents for their backend also has a TI chipset onboard and
I had excellent experience with it. Prior to that I had a motherboard
with an NEC chipset which replaced an even older board that I had
purchased a PCI firewire card that had a VIA chipset and worked fairly
inconsistently and was the cause for that motherboard upgrade....
