The mixer isn't required to play audio, only to control the volume
from within myth.

Check the permission and that the device isn't used by something else.

you have set your audio device as "default" ; when you go in the audio
settings; press the "Scan Audio Devices" button and select the one you
want to use. You are unlikely going to see "default" in the list.

Or use pulseaudio (PulseAudio:... or ALSA:pulse)
