Hi Brian,
I don't think anyone has touched on this (apologies to the list if
this was already answered).  Mythtv does include functionality that
allows you to shut down the backend when the system is not in use.
This can be further customized to allow automatic wakeup/shutdown for
combined backend/frontend systems. For more information, see the

In order to replicate this behavior in windows, you would need to be
able to query the Win MCE recording schedule, have some software that
can program the ACPI wakeup, and force a shutdown of the system (but
only when a user isn't on).  This is likely possible, but I'm not
aware of such software (and this list is probably not a good place to
get such expertise).
