I followed the instructions in
https://github.com/MythTV/packaging/blob/master/Gentoo/README
and added:
=media-tv/mythtv-0.24_p*
=media-plugins/mythvideo-0.24_p*
    [... for all plugins ...]

to my /etc/portatc/packege.unmask
