It's not so surprising if you record a lot of content from U.S.
broadcast networks.  They like to air competing programs in the same
timeslot, and almost never rerun the episode during the week.  So it's
not uncommon to be recording three programs at the same time.  And
then having a fourth tuner (such as my 2 HDHRs) allows you add extra
padding so that the beginning or end isn't chopped off.

On the other hand, cable networks tend to rebroadcast a new episode ad
nauseum during the week, so a single tuner (such as an HD-PVR) seems
to be perfectly adequate for all cable content.
