Sure, but ultimately as a release-to-release change, that's one (big if
you want to call it that) change.  But in a well structured protocol you
can make those kinds of changes and they will be invisible (i.e.
ignored) by those who don't understand them.

Those changes should only ever affect the BE anyway so they don't really
count as far as interop changes.  Yes, they can result in protocol
extensions but that's handled above.
