The recommendation is to have at least 2 physical drives. One for os temp
and database and media on a separate drive. This is for performance as the
db is worked fairly hard at times and could otherwise cause stutters of
playback.

Some people are spreading it out further than the above.

/var/lib/mythtv is the default location, and ensure that recordings are
going into sub directories (that dont exist when the mount fails - mounting
hides the underlying files that exist in that mount point / directory before
the mount.

This  ensures that if the mount fails the os partition isnt just filled up
to the brim and causes all sorts of other issues.
