   I dunno. I think the biggest problem about the master being off
is that it can't do the whole PVR thing. I would expect that would 
require the box to be more up than down.

   Backends are supposed to be "doing stuff when you're not looking"
and sometimes using a lot of CPU resources. They seem like a sort of
unavoidable power consumer. 

   If you want to save power then shut off the frontends and possibly
even unplug them. I have the FE in the bedroom on a surge strip for
this very purpose. It's not to save power but it does that very well
too.
