FYI - I solved the problem on my system.
XUbuntu apparently uses pulse these days. But, as it wouldn't be a
proper linux audio system without hosing it up in some stupid way...
they apparently don't install any tools to actually control pulse by
default.
Install the tools pavucontrol and pavumeter - pavumemter lets you see
if the sound is actually hitting the pulse server.
I had to fiddle with a bunch of settings in pavucontrol to make the
sound come out the toslink port. It works, mostly now. Everything
except for the volume buttons on my keyboard (because they are still
adjusting the level from the wrong output, and I have no idea how to
change that)
Why on earth they are shipping XUbuntu with Pulse, but then shipping a
mixer control for alsa, and not including any controls for pulse, I
have no idea.
